Urgent Appeal: Tamilnadu FENGAL Storm
We are a Disaster Relief service organization namely PALAM-NGO (People Awareness and Legal Aid Movement), have always been in the forefront for relief and rehabilitation work during and after natural calamities.
Catastrophic Flooding Strikes Tamilnadu :
From October 15 to December, 2024, a severe depression over the Bay of Bengal unleashed unprecedented rains, triggering widespread flooding across Tamilnadu . With an astonishing 250 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours in Tamilnadu, and heavy rains continuing in Chennai, the situation has become dire, hundreds displaced, and vast areas submerged.
Communities Devastated:
Entire towns and villages, especially in Chennai ,Thiruvallur , Chengalpattu have been ravaged by the floods. Roads, bridges, and vital infrastructure have been destroyed, isolating many communities. In Chennai, Thiruvallur,Chengalpattu | Kanchipuram,_Vilupuram districts a family tragically lost their lives after being swept away by the floods. In Chennai Adyar,koovam, the all lakes overflowed, displacing thousands.
Government Efforts and the Need for Immediate Help:
Evacuees being sent to relief camps, the scale emergency services face constant challenges, including unresponsive emergency numbers, exploitation by private boat operators, and deteriorating conditions in flood-hit areas like Chennai. Tamilnadu India
Government resources are stretched to their limits. Relief efforts are ongoing, but the need for food, shelter, medical aid, and emergency supplies far exceeds what is available. This is where NGOs play a critical role. While the government is coordinating rescue and relief operations, NGOs like PALAM step in to provide immediate, on-the-ground assistance. NGOs can quickly distribute relief kits, arrange temporary shelters, and provide medical services where government agencies may be delayed.
